The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, IEBC has officially published the list of approved presidential candidates who will battle it out for the seat in August. The list compromised 16 candidates. Eight of them are vying with a political party while the other eight are independent candidates.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka who last week told Kenyans that he had submitted his name to IEBC alongside his running mate for the presidential election was missing from the form.
Those present are the two frontrunners; Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga and Kenya Kwanza Alliance presidential candidate Deputy President William Ruto. The others include Mwangi Wa Iria of Usawa Kwa Wote Party, Jimmy Wanjigi of the Safina Party, Ekuru Aukot of the Thirdway Alliance, George Wajackoya of the Roots Party, Njeru Ganthangu of Ford Asili and David Mwaura of the Agano Party.
The cleared independent candidates include; Jeremiah Nyaga, Faith Munyoki, Kemunto Nyangori, Muthiora Kiriara, George Munyota, Peter Mibiko and Gibson Ngaruiya.
The 16 will be required to attend interviews to be vetted by the commission between May 29 and June 6 after which they will be officially cleared to run for the presidency. Therefore, more names can be dropped along the way.
The list originally had over forty hopefuls. The IEBC slashed it by more than half due to procedural issues with those affected and failure to meet requirements.
It is not clear why Kalonzo was shown the door because the commission initially gave a positive response about clearing him to vie. Or perhaps he never submitted his papers to the agency, to begin with.
